Spotlight Interview: Meet Certified Ross Instructor, Jen DeVore Richter

Q: Jen, can you share a little bit about your background and what led you to painting?
Absolutely! I’ve been an art enthusiast my entire life. Creativity has always been woven into who I am, whether that was running my own photography studio, experimenting with embroidery, or exploring different painting styles. Over time, I discovered the joy and freedom of oil painting in the alla prima—or wet-on-wet—style, which Bob Ross famously taught. It quickly became a passion that I wanted to share with others.

Q: How did you become a Certified Bob Ross Instructor?
I began by taking a hobby class locally in Denver, CO. Then I traveled to Muncie, Indiana to tour Bob's original tv studio for a day at The Bob Ross Experience and that led me to the Bob Ross Certification Program, where instructors are trained in his techniques and philosophy.

I completed Level 1 of the training program back in Muncie and Levels 2 and 3 in New Smyrna at the Bob Ross Workshop & Gallery, which is now run by Nic and Ada Hankins.

The certification process was not only rigorous but also incredibly rewarding. It gave me the confidence and skillset to guide students step by step so that anyone—whether they’ve painted before or not—can walk away with a finished painting they’re proud of.

Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching classes?
What I love most is watching the transformation that happens in the room. Students often arrive a little nervous, convinced they’re “not artistic” or that painting is too hard. But as we go through the process together, their confidence grows. By the end of the class, they’re beaming while holding up a painting they never thought they could create. For me, it’s not just about the art—it’s about creating an experience that’s relaxing, joyful, and empowering. Seeing students surprise themselves is the best reward.

Q: What can someone expect if they sign up for one of your classes?
Expect a fun, welcoming environment where perfection isn’t the goal—enjoying the process is. I provide all the supplies, walk students through every brushstroke, and encourage them along the way. We laugh, we relax, and by the end, everyone goes home with their own original oil painting. Whether you come alone, with friends, or as part of a group celebration, you’ll leave with a memory as well as a masterpiece.
