It's interesting how easily we try new things as children.
We take art classes, learn instruments, join sports teams, and experiment with different activities simply because they look fun. There is very little pressure to be good at them. The goal is to explore, learn, and enjoy the experience.
As adults, that becomes much harder.
Many of us spend our days focused on work, family responsibilities, household projects, and an endless list of obligations. When we do find free time, it can feel easier to stick with what we already know rather than step into something unfamiliar.
That's one of the reasons I love teaching Bob Ross® painting classes.
When I teach painting classes at Ethan's Gallery & Studio in Olde Town Arvada, I meet students who are trying something completely new. Some have never painted before. Others haven't touched a paintbrush since high school. Many arrive feeling excited—but also a little nervous.
One of the first things I tell them is that they are exactly where they are supposed to be.
Bob Ross designed his painting method for everyday people. His goal was never to create professional artists. His goal was to help people discover the joy of painting. That philosophy is what makes these classes so approachable for beginners.
During a typical workshop, students learn Bob's famous Wet-on-Wet® technique step-by-step. Mountains appear where blank canvas once existed. Trees take shape. Reflections emerge on lakes. By the end of class, students are often surprised by what they created in just a few hours.
What I find most rewarding isn't the finished painting. It's watching people's confidence grow throughout the process.
The person who began class saying, "I'm not artistic," suddenly realizes they can paint a mountain. The student who was worried about making mistakes discovers that those mistakes usually become part of the painting. The couple looking for a fun date day leaves with two unique works of art and a shared memory.
A hobby doesn't have to become a business. It doesn't have to be something you master. Sometimes the value of a hobby is simply having a creative outlet that helps you slow down, focus on something enjoyable, and experience the satisfaction of learning.
That has certainly been true for me.
Art has been part of my life since childhood, but becoming a Certified Ross Instructor® introduced me to a whole new creative community. Through teaching, I've met people from all walks of life who share a common desire to try something new, challenge themselves, and have fun along the way.
Whether painting becomes a lifelong passion or simply a memorable afternoon, the experience has a way of reminding us that we're never too old to learn something new.
